Features and benefits
- Energy efficiency: T5 lights, especially T5 LED tubes, consume significantly less energy than older fluorescent types. T5 High Output (HO) lamps, a brighter version, can deliver up to 100 lumens per watt, compared to 50–70 LPW for T12s.
- High light output: Despite their compact size, T5 High Output (HO) fluorescent lamps can have more than double the light output of T8 and T12 systems. Fewer T5 lamps are needed to produce the same amount of light, which can reduce maintenance.
- Compact size: The slimmer design of T5 bulbs (5/8-inch diameter) makes them suitable for smaller fixtures and spaces, such as under-cabinet lighting or illuminated displays.

T5 light types
T5 lights are available as either traditional fluorescent tubes or modern LED bulbs. You can either replace the bulb or replace the entire fixture.
T5 fluorescent
- This was the original T5 technology, though many users now switch to LED for greater efficiency.
- Standard T5 fluorescent lamps typically last around 20,000 hours.
- T5 High Output (HO) fluorescent tubes are a variant that provides higher lumen output for spaces requiring brighter light.
- These lamps require an electronic ballast to operate.
T5 LED
- These are designed as direct replacements for T5 fluorescent tubes in compatible fixtures.
- They are the most energy-efficient option and have the longest lifespan.
